More residents preparing to leave flood-threatened Attawapiskat

ATTAWAPISKAT, Ont. - More residents of the James Bay community of Attawapiskat are being flown out today because of the ongoing threat of flooding.

Another 132 residents are being flown to Cochrane, Ont., after 118 of their neighbours were airlifted to Waterloo on Monday. So far, a total of 1,200 residents of the community north of Timmins have been flown to communities across the province.

About 130 residents are in Hearst, 150 are in Greenstone, 227 are in Kapuskasing and approximately 440 are in Thunder Bay.

The breakup of ice on the Attawapiskat River could pose significant risks of flooding in the community.

The Ministry of Natural Resources is co-ordinating the flights and Emergency Management Ontario is working with host communities to care for the residents.
