Twitter growing pains

Seems the ever-popular micro-blogging social networking site Twitter had to be de-wormed over the Easter weekend:

The Associated Press* reports that a worm targetted Twitter's network began infecting accounts as early as Saturday. The worm, which used four different attacks, was contained by Monday.

Its apparant objective was to promote a rival site.

My gut tells me this was more of a proof-of-concept attack for a bigger spam push. Regardless, it does prove one thing for certain: Twitter is now hit the big leagues.

The question is, will the Fail Whale now have new cousin? And what would we call it?

* In order to protest AP's recent sabre-rattling over content scraping, I've decided to paraphrase their content in my own words and not to link to AP stories.
