Suncor reports December oil production on target despite poor weather

CALGARY - Suncor Energy Inc. (TSX:SU) said Thursday it achieved its December oil sands production targets, which were adjusted downward after a fire at one of its key facilities.

The Calgary-based energy company said oil production averaged 235,000 barrels per day for December, a month marked by inclement weather and an extended maintenance shutdown.

The company spent much of the month repairing damage caused by a fire at an oil upgrader north of Fort McMurray, Alta.

Suncor's oil sands operations ran at reduced rates throughout the maintenance period, which concluded late last month.

Suncor said December's oil production numbers boosted the average output for the year to 228,000 barrels a day, up modestly from the running average of 227,000 barrels reported at the end of November.

Suncor expects to release more details on its production performance, along with quarterly and fiscal earnings, on Jan. 20.
