Hong Kong opposition wins at least 22 seats, keeps veto

HONG KONG - Hong Kong's opposition has won more than one-third of seats in legislative elections, retaining its veto power over major legislation.

Results being announced Monday show the opposition has claimed at least 22 of 60 seats in a legislative race.

The key threshold was a total of 21 seats - a number that would allow them to block major legislation that requires a two-thirds majority for passage.

The opposition had been expected to suffer a setback in the election after China gave a timetable for political reform in Hong Kong last year.

One-half of Hong Kong's 30 legislative seats are elected directly by voters, with the rest chosen by special-interest groups.
