Montreal school board says majority of schools will reopen Wednesday

Published Tuesday March 18th, 2008

MONTREAL - Most Montreal schools that were closed due to heavy rooftop snow have been cleared to reopen Wednesday.

The Commission scolaire de Montreal said Tuesday afternoon that only 16 of 200 schools will remain closed. School board chair Diane De Courcy says some schools will remain closed until after the Easter break, including one high school where snow removal has been difficult.

The school board says the snow cleaning has cost it $4 million.

Four people have died in building collapses in the past week in Quebec, prompting school closures and other evacuations across the province.

A roof collapse last Wednesday killed three women at a specialty food store in Morin-Heights. One man died in Shawinigan, northeast of Montreal, on Sunday after the roof of his home collapsed.

Mr. Arseneau, I am an NBCC Student who has been displaced by this strike.

While I agree that your members deserve fair compensation for the outstanding job they do, I just wanted to offer my perspective on the matter.

I would like to state that I am not a "kid". I am 39 years old with a family to support... and I have never made as much as $15 an hour in my life.

I find it silly that people thumb down my comment. I stated facts. It's a reality in this province that a lot of people live under the poverty line. You learn to make ends meet and live within your means. Due to inflation we all need raises from time to time - I'm not denying that.

I'm simply saying that $15 an hour is more than a lot of people make. Everything is relative. If you make $20/hour and are used to the lifestyle that brings, then $15 an hour would seem like little. However, for those people who work min wage or in a call centre for $12 an hour and only 30 hours a week - $15 an hour a week is a lot more.
