Prime Minister Stephen Harper to visit flood zone in New Brunswick today

Published Friday May 2nd, 2008

FREDERICTON - Prime Minister Stephen Harper is going to visit areas of New Brunswick this afternoon hit by this week's floods.

An official in the Prime Minister's Office has confirmed the visit, but details were not immediately available on where he will be going.

Flood waters have started to recede in Fredericton, but life is far from normal in the New Brunswick capital.

More than 50 streets remain closed and the St. John River is still being measured at more than eight metres, well above the flood stage.

The Red Cross has also opened a second evacuation centre.

Meanwhile, officials will be keeping a close eye on the situation downstream, where the river levels continue to rise.
