Outspoken retired general Rick Hillier tackling memoirs in two books

Published Wednesday September 17th, 2008

TORONTO - Retired general Rick Hillier, the outspoken former chief of the Canadian Forces, is writing his memoirs set to be published in two books scheduled for release next year and in 2010.

Hillier says in a release that "there is a powerful story to be told" about Canadian soldiers "who risk their lives every day."

His two-book contract is with HarperCollinsCanada, with the first set for release in October 2009.

HarperCollins says that book will focus on Hillier's time with the Armed Forces, including his mission in Afghanistan.

The second book will offer insight on leadership and provide "lessons that can apply to anyone looking for an edge in business, politics, sports, volunteerism or other arenas."

Hillier retired as Canada's top military officer in July at age 53 after a distinguished career.

During his 3 1/2-year stint as chief of defence staff, he gained a reputation as a staunch defender of Canada's troops and for his blunt talk about Canada's defence policy.

Hillier's book agent said Wednesday that there was intense competition to publish the memoirs.

The books will pay tribute to the accomplishments of the Armed Forces, Hillier said.

"There is a powerful story to be told," Hillier said. "Not mine, but the story of our Canadian sons and daughters who risk their lives every day."

Considered a "soldier's soldier," Hillier helped raise the profile of the Canadian Forces while publicly campaigning to maintain Canada's military role in Afghanistan.

Iris Tupholme, vice-president, publisher and editor-in-chief at HarperCollinsCanada, promised revealing insight into what has become known as one of the most demanding and frustrating military engagements in the last half century.

"The general's memoir is a unique historical document and as such will provide Canadians with a better understanding of their own place in the world's most troubled territories," said Tupholme.

"Gen. Rick Hillier has been an agent of change and an inspiration to Canada's troops as well as a controversial figure in Canadian politics. We look forward to bringing his compelling story to Canadian readers."

In addition to writing his memoirs, Hillier is helping TD Bank develop its leadership-building program, is honorary chancellor of Memorial University in St. John's, N.L., and has said he plans to lecture.
