N.B. woman who stole $121,000 from Empire Theatres gets prison time

SAINT JOHN, N.B. - A New Brunswick woman was sentenced Tuesday to two-and-a-half years in prison for stealing from her employer.

Jenesta Marie Holloway, 29, of Black River, N.B., pleaded guilty to stealing $121,000 from Empire Theatres. Hired as theatre manager at the Rothesay, N.B., location, Holloway stole the cash over a period of eight months.

The court heard she purposely withheld deposit envelopes from security and then spent the cash on employees, friends and herself.

Her lawyer, David Lutz, said Holloway has an emotional problem where she wants people to like her, adding 40 per cent of the money she stole was spent on trying to get others to be her friend.

While Holloway is currently unable to pay back Empire Theatres, she's been handed a restitution order that allows the company to seize money from her in the future.

Holloway offered a brief apology in court, stating that other than saying sorry, all she can do is try to pay the money back over time.

Empire's vice-president of operations, Brian MacLeod, said the company has never experienced a breach of trust of this magnitude.

He added that employees who worked under Holloway were put under a lot of stress and turmoil for things they didn't do.

"They were feeling very much like they themselves were also being considered potential persons involved with the theft," he said.

"They were very uncomfortable, very nervous for a period of time while the investigation was going on. So as young kids, they were on pins and needles and put through a lot."

Crazy. Ms. Holloway must have some pretty serious emotional issues if she would resort to stealing money from her employer. With a theft of this amount, it amazes me that she thought she could get away with it.... or maybe she just didn't care if she got caught or not. Shame on her for putting other employees through so much stress.

2.5 years in prison and restitution? That's ridiculous.

She only got 2.5 years + restitution because Sobeys owns the theatres. Funny how a faceless corporation can have someone handed a heavy sentence compared to if she had stolen from an average joe blow. The prosecutor probably has a decent discount at the grocery store now that he's locked her away.
