Fallen Canadian soldier begins journey home after solemn sendoff

KANDAHAR, Afghanistan - The body of Cpl. Nick Bulger is on its way back to Canada.

Hundreds of soldiers turned out in the hot afternoon sun at Kandahar Airfield on Saturday to pay their respects as Bulger's casket was loaded onto a transport plane.

Bulger was praised as a family-oriented man with a big heart, and as a passionate soldier.

The 30-year-old father of two was killed Friday when the convoy he was in struck a dreaded improvised explosive device in Zhari district.

Canadian commander Brig.-Gen. Jonathan Vance, who was in the vehicle just in front, escaped unscathed but five other soldiers were hurt.

Bulger's death brings to 121 Canadian soldiers who have died on the Afghan mission since 2002.
