Five New Brunswick schools close after staff shortage; swine flu suspected

Published Friday October 30th, 2009

FREDERICTON - Five schools in southwest New Brunswick have closed today with swine flu as the likely cause.

Provincial officials say the schools closed because of a shortage of staff.

An official with the province's Education Department says it's likely that at least of some of those who are sick have swine flu.

The H1N1 virus has also forced the closure of schools in Vancouver and Conne River, Newfoundland.

Meanwhile, a shortage of swine flu vaccine has forced health officials in New Brunswick to cancel some public clinics and impose new rules limiting the shots to priority groups.

Those include children, aboriginals, health-care workers, pregnant women and people with chronic illness.

Dr. Eilish Cleary, New Brunswick's chief medical officer of health, says more than 80,000 people have been vaccinated this week.

But she says there have been long lineups at some clinics.

First they scare you, then they tell you they have the cure, then when you line up for the cure, they don't have anymore! It is no wonder people are getting paranoid.

The press and the government don't have that great a track record for telling the truth either.
