While at the Southern Head lighthouse in Grand Manan, my husband and I spotted these birds along with their friends swimming and sunning themselves at the bottom of the cliff. I think they are black guillemots. The other bird I spotted at the St. George Marsh but do not have a guess as to the species. Could you please help me identify them? – Shelly Merrill- MacKillop, St. George Shelly is right on with the birds on the rocks. They are adult black guillemots in fine breeding colours. The coal black body and conspicuous white wing patches are diagnostic for this seabird, which is a cousin of the more familiar Atlantic puffin and nests widely on offshore islands in the Bay of Fundy. The bird in the tree at the St. George Marsh is an eastern kingbird. I’m identifying it by its characteristic profile, proportions and clean white breast and belly combined with a dark head and upper parts. The kingbird is a flycatcher and often nests near marshes, ponds or freshwater lakes. – Jim Wilson
