Could you tell me if this is a moth or butterfly? It was in my amur maple hedge for quite a length of time. – Martina Toner, Grand Bay-Westfield This common New Brunswick butterfly is knows as the ‘white admiral’ or ‘banded purple.’ The larvae feed on birches and this species is especially common in forested areas. Sometimes many dozens will be seen“puddling” on woods roads or small groups can be observed extracting salts from bear dung. – Don McAlpine
