Our six-year-old grandson, Caleb, discovered this fellow in their chicken house on Sept. 18. The chickens were outside and quite apprehensive about going near it. This great horned owl is incredibly handsome. Lorraine Cochrane, Bains CornerWow, were those chickens unlucky and lucky! Unlucky to have been visited by the most ferocious bird predator that is found here and fortunate to escape with their lives! A great horned owl is capable of killing the whole coop if the chickens were confined inside. But apparently they had enough room to out-maneuver this fellow, whose looks convey its fierceness very well. Great horned owls are capable of killing and carrying off prey as large as a cat or a small dog and they often do it if given the chance. Fortunately they are a nocturnal species so keeping the family pet inside at night eliminates the risk. The feet and talons of this owl are very impressive and it is very strong, hence its nickname Tiger of the Air The fact it entered the chicken coop, presumably on foot, is an indication of its capability. No wonder the flock was apprehensive. Jim Wilson
