This bird was on the porch at a camp at Shikta Hawk Brook on West Glassville Road in mid August. The photo was taken by Charles Dugan. Could you please help us identify what we found? MercerThis is another first for this Sightings page. The bird isnt extremely rare but its quite uncommon here and its numbers are in sharp decline across Eastern North America for a number of reasons. Its a wood thrush, a robin relative that is found mostly in hardwood forests and reaches the northeastern limit of its breeding range here in the Maritimes. The wood thrush is identified from other thrushes by the bold round spots on the white chest, belly and sides, a rufous head, bold white eye ring and streaked face. The bird looks a bit disheveled. Possibly it had collided with a window before the picture was taken. Normally they are very shy and hard to approach, making photographs hard to get. Jim Wilson
