I took this photo while on a trip. I think it is a kingfishers but I’m not sure. – Dave CarpenterThe bird in Dave’s photos is perched in a great spot to see fish and it would likely be used by a kingfisher too, but this fellow is not a kingfisher. But it does feed on fish. It’s a double-crested cormorant, likely drying itself and resting after a fishing expedition. Cormorants are diving birds that swim well and actively pursue their fish prey underwater, catching them in their hooked beak while swimming. Kingfishers are diving birds too, but are smaller and spot the fish from a perch above the surface or as they hover above the water in search of prey. They then dive into the water and capture the fish in their bill. Obviously they have to learn to compensate for the bending of light rays as the light passes through the surface, causing the prey to appear in a slightly different spot than it actually is. Kingfishers tend to go after small fish while cormorants can take larger ones. – Jim Wilson
