Freezing rain causes thousands to lose power in New Brunswick

FREDERICTON - Freezing rain and ice that knocked down trees in New Brunswick left thousands of people in the province without power for much of the day Friday.
About 6,000 people woke up without power, although that number had dropped to fewer than 100 by Friday evening.
Most of the outages were in Bouctouche, Moncton, Fredericton and Shediac.
NB Power spokeswoman Heather MacLean said freezing rain Thursday night caused ice to build up on trees, which fell over and knocked down lines.
She said 25 crews, including several working on contract, were out repairing the damage.
Strong winds were creating new problems throughout the day, which caused repairs to take longer, said MacLean.
"That's never good when there's ice on trees and there's wind," she said.
"There has been more snow, there has been wind that's come up, so that definitely impacts restoration."
