St. John's, N.L., to use fish salt on roads in light of salt shortage

ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - Road crews in St. John's, N.L., are switching to fish salt to deal with ice on city streets.

The city had started looking for ways to conserve road salt after its supplier said it couldn't deliver 8,000 tonnes of salt still on order.

The city's acting mayor, Dennis O'Keefe, says the city's supplier has agreed to provide fish salt, which is a higher grade salt.

St. John's has used 24,000 tonnes of salt on its roads in recent months.

Numerous snowstorms that have been pounding Atlantic Canada in recent months have left road salt in short supply.
