The elections pose the toughest challenge yet to 28-year ruler Robert Mugabe.

The stern warning comes as convoys of armoured personnel carriers and Israeli-built water canon escorted by police outriders and soldiers patrol the capita in a show of force.

A statement from the chiefs of police, army, air force, prison service and intelligence agency warns the armed forces are "up to the task in thwarting all threats to national security."
