Support staff at Ontario's 24 community colleges stage information pickets

TORONTO - Support staff at Ontario's 24 community colleges will hold information pickets Thursday as their union presses for a new contract.

Talks resumed Wednesday between the Ontario Public Service Employees Union and college officials in hopes of averting a strike. The current collective agreement expires on August 31.

The workers want wage parity with college faculty members, who were earlier awarded a four per cent increase.

The support staff voted 69 per cent to strike, if necessary, and nearly 80 per cent voted to reject the latest offer.

OPSEU represents 6,500 college support workers in all 24 colleges.
