Auditor says Saskatchewan government lags behind in clear financial reporting
Published Thursday September 4th, 2008

REGINA - Saskatchewan's auditor says people are only getting part of the picture when it comes to the province's finances and that needs to change.
In the second volume of his 2008 report, Fred Wendel says Saskatchewan has fallen behind other provinces when it comes to reporting on the entire government's financial affairs.
Wendel says reporting focuses only on the general revenue fund and doesn't include all government agencies.
He says that creates confusion and people can't know if they're being properly taxed or if officials are spending appropriately.
Wendel does say that the province's financial condition has improved significantly, with an annual surplus of almost $1.9 billion.
But the auditor also cautions that the province should be careful about its spending because the nearly 20 per cent increase in revenue was largely from volatile oil and gas resources.
