Sudan military says 116 Darfur rebels have surrendered, handed over vehicles

KHARTOUM, Sudan - Reports from Sudan say a group of more than 100 Darfurian rebels has surrendered to government forces.

The UN-African Union mission in Darfur is attempting to confirm the report that 116 members of the Justice and Equality Movement have given up the fight.

The mission, known as UNAMID, says it received information from Sudanese military authorities that the group also handed over 13 vehicles.

It was unclear what prompted the surrender.

The conflict in Darfur erupted in 2003 after ethnic Africans in western Sudan accused the Arab-dominated government of discrimination and monopolizing resources.
