Former interior minister Daniel Vaillant said former presidential candidate Segolene Royal and Martine Aubry, the architect of the country's 35-hour work week, were neck-in-neck with almost 100 per cent of party members' votes counted.

The Socialists' national secretary Razzy Hamadi had says the polls appeared to narrowly favour Aubry.

Royal's camp, however, refused to concede the race.
