Nova Scotia justice minister relieved of responsibility for police board

HALIFAX, N.S. - Nova Scotia's new justice minister, Ross Landry, has been relieved of his responsibility for the province's Police Review Board because of a probable conflict of interest.

The provincial government issued a statement Friday saying the province's finance minister, Graham Steele, will oversee the board on a temporary basis.

The change was made because Landry, a former staff sergeant with the RCMP, will be involved in a hearing in September that will examine the termination of a former Stellarton police chief.

In November 2007, six complaints were filed against Amby Heighton and he was subsequently fired in October 2008, though no details have been released.

Landry has told Nova Scotia's conflict of interest commissioner about the situation and has asked if any further steps are required.

The Finance Department will continue to oversee the board until a final decision is made in the Stellarton case.
