Winnipeg fighting to avoid what could be the city's worst year for mosquitoes

WINNIPEG - Winnipeg is stepping up measures to avoid what could be the city's worst year ever for mosquitoes.

The city says the spring flood coupled with a recent deluge of rain have created ideal breeding conditions for the buzzing bloodsuckers. Monitoring sites are already reporting high levels of mosquito larvae in standing water within a 10 kilometre radius of the city.

Helicopters and ground crews are working seven days a week to spray areas in a bid to kill the bugs before they become adults and take flight.

The city says it's too early to say if their efforts will be successful.

To help in the fight property owners are being encouraged to dump containers of standing water, drain eavestroughs and cover rainwater collectors.
