Search called off for pair in canoe between Nova Scotia and P.E.I.

PUGWASH, N.S. - The search for two people in a canoe in rough waters off Nova Scotia was called off Saturday night after officials determined there was likely no emergency.

A person staying at a cottage in the Pugwash area spotted the pair in the Northumberland Strait. It looked as though the canoe was being pushed out to sea toward P.E.I., said Navy Lt. Al Blondin of the Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Halifax.

"It was assumed by the resident that they were in distress based on what they could see," he said.

Blondin said the two people in the canoe were wearing life-jackets and did not signal there was any distress.

A helicopter from Charlottetown and a coast guard cutter from Summerside, P.E.I., searched the area for the pair.

A Cormorant helicopter from Greenwood, N.S., was also dispatched to the scene.

Blondin said search conditions were good, but there was no sign of the two people or their canoe.

He said it's believed the two people made it to shore safely.

"After sunset, they called the search off," he said. "They assessed this as having been a false alarm."
