Repairs underway in flooded northern N.B., but recovery will take weeks

EDMUNDSTON, N.B. - Recovery is underway in sections of northwestern New Brunswick affected by flash flooding last weekend, but it will be several weeks before life is back to normal.

Ernie MacGillivray of the New Brunswick Emergency Measures Organization says about 40 people still can't get to vehicles trapped behind a major washout in the Glasier Lake area.

A local state of emergency remains in effect in the area because of the hazards of trying to get around washed-out roads and damaged bridges.

MacGillivray says it could take a month before the main road to Glasier Lake is repaired.

MacGillivray says flooding in the area may have been made worse by several beaver ponds that let go and dumped a lot of extra water into rain-swollen rivers and streams.

The Emergency Measures Organization is asking people to report their flood losses to the provincial government, which is considering a possible assistance package.
