SAINT JOHN, N.B. - New Brunswick has rung up 200 new jobs at the TD Bank call centre in Saint John.

The bank announced Monday it will establish a new national claims response centre, adding to the 200 employees already working at its Saint John client service centre.

The provincial government is providing a forgivable loan of $5,600 for each of the 200 new jobs, a total of just over $1.1 million.

"Today's announcement is the result of a new aggressive investment strategy, a hands-on approach from our government and the development of a strong partnership with TD," stated Premier Shawn Graham.

"Partnerships such as this one will help us move the province toward self-sufficiency by 2026."

Alain Thibault, president of TD Insurance, said the existing Saint John centre has handled more than 300,000 calls so far this year.

Although TD Bank Financial Group, like the other big banks, is barred by law from selling insurance in its branches, it offers a range of insurance products including credit protection, home and auto coverage, life insurance and travel policies.

The Saint John centre is the consolidated operation of the former Liberty Mutual Insurance centre, acquired by TD in 2004.

Sources who leaked the news of the TD expansion early Monday said it is the first of five government announcements this week involving hundreds of new private-sector jobs.
