PORTLAND, Ore. - An environmental activist who fled to Canada to avoid charges in the United States has been sentenced to 78 months in a U.S. prison for arson that destroyed cement and logging trucks in 2001.

However, the court in Portland, Ore., gave the 34-year-old activist, who goes by the name Tre Arrow, credit for 48 months served in a Canadian prison while he fought extradition.

The activist says he changed his name from Michael Scarpitti because the trees told him to do it.

The prosecutor said that everybody involved in the long investigation is happy that Arrow has finally admitted guilt after repeatedly denying it over the years.

Arrow was indicted in August 2002 and became an international fugitive until his arrest for shoplifting in Victoria in March 2004.
