Mexican pop group RBD announces impending breakup

Published Friday August 15th, 2008

MEXICO CITY - The Mexican pop group RBD will split up after four years together, but has not said when its last concert will be.

A statement on the group's website says its concerts later this month in Spain will "mark the beginning of this final stage."

The announcement says that "every great project needs to transform itself in order to excel, and today we are starting that process."

Friday's statement was signed by the group's six members.

Calls to RBD producer Pedro Damian were not returned.

The group was born in 2004 on Mexico's "Rebelde" television program, and continued even after the program ended in 2006. RBD became popular across the Spanish-speaking world for songs like "Salvame," and "Un Poco de Tu Amor."
