Calgary police looking for tips after woman's car robbed of $200,000 worth of gems

CALGARY - A Calgary gem dealer who had more than $200,000 worth of jewels stolen from her car last week had no insurance and is now on the hook for the missing stones.

The woman was on a business call Tuesday and 30 seconds after she left her vehicle, a man broke into her car and stole the precious gems and other items.

Police say the woman couldn't afford the $10,000 per month that it would have cost to insure the stones, so when her car was robbed she lost everything.

Investigators say it's possible the woman was targeted by thieves who knew she left valuable gems in her vehicle.

Police are looking for witnesses who may have been in the area at the time or anyone who has any information about the stolen gems.
