N.S. NDP oppose Facility Association bid for insurance rate increase

HALIFAX, N.S. - Nova Scotia New Democrats say an application by the Facility Association for an increase in insurance rates is unfair.

Graham Steele, the party's Insurance Act critic, has written to the Utility and Review Board to say he opposes an increase.

Steele says it's unfair to those Nova Scotians who find themselves in Facility Association by choice, not necessity, to raise their rates.

He says the association admits that some drivers will be adversely affected by the application.

Steele says the board should only approve an increase if it is actuarially justified.

The Facility Association is the considered the insurer of last resort for drivers who do not qualify for private insurance.
