Explosion damages B.C. secondary school just hours before students arrive

CHASE, B.C. - Firefighters narrowly escaped an explosion Friday that rocked the high school in Chase, in B.C.'s southern interior.
The fire crew had been called to the school after the custodian thought he smelled gas.
"They'd been on the roof checking it over. Once they got back to the ground then the explosion occurred, so it's very, very fortunate no one got hurt," said Chase Mayor Harry Danyluk.
Kamloops-Thompson School District assistant superintendent Ross Spina says the 7 a.m. blast tore apart a brick chimney, scattering debris throughout the building.
Only the custodian and two teachers were in the school and they were not hurt.
Classes for the school's 200 students were cancelled for the day. (CFJC,CHNL)
