
Quinn-Smith, Bairu win 5,000 races at Canadian track and field championships

TORONTO - Tara Quinn - Smith of Toronto won the women's 5,000 metres while Simon Bairu of Regina took the men's event Thursday at the 2009 Canadian track and field championships.
Quinn-Smith won in a time of 15 minutes 50.35 seconds. Kendra Schaaf of Craven, Sask., was second in 15:52.74 while Danette Doetzel of Macklin, Sask., took third in 16:04.61.
In the men's 5,000, Bairu won in 13:39.23. Eric Gillis of Antigonish, N.S., placed second in 13:49.45 while Mark Steeds of Paris, Ont., took third in 14:08.54.
Competition continues Friday with a full slate of events.
