Four people injured after car plunges into chilly New Brunswick river

JACQUET RIVER, N.B. - Four people were injured Sunday evening when their car went over a guardrail and plunged into a river in northern New Brunswick.

RCMP Sgt. Scott Sawyer says firefighters, paramedics and bystanders pulled two men and two women out of the water in an area between Jacquet River and Nash Creek on Highway 11.

Sawyer says the accident happened around 5 p.m. when the car struck the rail, went over it and dropped about 30 metres into the icy, fast-moving waters.

Officials used a paddle boat to remove the passengers and take them to shore individually.

One person is in intensive care at the George L. Dumont Hospital in Moncton, while the others suffered non life-threatening injuries and hypothermia.

Sawyer says the accident is under investigation, but weather conditions were good and alcohol doesn't appear to be a factor.
