QUEBEC CITY, Que. - Quarterback Benoit Groulx of the Laval Rouge Et Or is in the running for a second consecutive Hec Crighton trophy as Canada's outstanding university football player.

The Montreal native was named most valuable player of the Quebec University Football League for the third time in the last four years on Monday, which makes him a candidate for the Crighton trophy.

Concordia linebacker Cory Greenwood is defensive player of the year, Laval tackle David Bouchard is lineman of the year, McGill quarterback Jonathan Collin is rookie of the year and McGill receiver Charles-Antoine Sinotte gets the Russ Jackson Award as scholastic player of the year.

Award winners from the three other CIS conferences are to be announced Thursday. The national award winners will be named at the Desjardins Vanier Cup banquet in Quebec City on Nov. 26.

Groulx is the third player in CIS history with four Crighton nominations. The others, who were also quarterbacks, were Chris Flynn of Saint Mary's (1988-90), Brent Schneider of Saskatchewan (1993, 1994, 1996) and Phil Cote of Ottawa (1998-2000).

In his fifth season at Laval, Groulx completed 101 of 138 passes for 1,462 yards and a league-leading 18 touchdown passes despite missing two games with an injury and three times being taken out at half time.

The QUFL coach of the year is to be announced next week.
