ST. PETERSBURG, Russia - Mariah Madigan of Richmond Hill, Ont., won silver in the women's trampoline event at the sport's world age group championships on Friday.
It was Canada's third medal of the competition and a second trip to the podium for Madigan. She earned gold on Wednesday in synchronized trampoline with Samantha Smith of Richmond Hill.
In the women's 15-16 age group trampoline, American Savannah Vinsant won the gold medal with 35.400 points. Madigan, third in qualifying, followed at 35.300 and Nadezhda Glebova of Russia was third at 35.100.
"It's a big step for my career to come here and win a couple of medals," said Madigan, who was 16th in the event at the 2007 age group worlds in Quebec City. "I did my best ever routine today. The beginning was especially strong and I know the ending could have been better. When the American finished her routine I knew it would be close for first place. We had the two most difficult routines of the competition.
"I was a bit disappointed to come so close to gold but I can't complain about the medal."
Curtis Gerein of Kamloops, B.C., was the top Canadian in the men's 15-16 trampoline - placing 21st.
Canadians were in three other finals. Sydney Brown of Burlington, Ont., was fourth in women's tumbling in the 17-18 age group, missing a medal by 0.4 points.
Vincent Lavoie of Drummondville, Que., was sixth in the men's 17-18 tumbling and Celine Madigan of Richmond Hill and Tamara O'Brien of New Westminster, B.C., were eighth in girls 13-14 synchronized trampoline.
Thomas Alcock of Toronto and Jean-Christophe Martel of Quebec City were 10th in the 13-14 boys synchro, missing a berth in the final by half a point.
