ST. PETERSBURG, Russia - Samantha Smith of Richmond Hill, Ont., won the bronze medal in women's trampoline and Alexandria Giesbrecht of Calgary was also third in double mini trampoline on Saturday to conclude the world age group championships in trampoline and tumbling.
Canada ends the four-day competition with five medals: one gold, two silver and two bronze. It was a second trip to the podium for Smith who also won gold in synchronized trampoline with Mariah Madigan of Richmond Hill on Wednesday.
In women's trampoline in the 17-18 age group, Volha Kapustsina of Belarus took the gold with 36.400 points. Emma Smith of Britain was second at 36.000 and Samantha Smith third at 35.700. Samantha Smith was seventh in qualifying making the final by 0.6 points.
"I'm really pleased to win the medal," said Smith, 17. "In the final, I stayed in the middle more and didn't travel as much as in the prelims. I also gained more height and overall it just looked a lot cleaner. Knowing I had already won a medal earlier in the competition also gave me a lot of confidence."
In women's double mini trampoline in the 13-14 age group, Kiara Nowlin led the U.S. to a 1-2 finish with 66.900 points. Shaylee Dunavin was second at 66.200 and Giesbrecht followed at 66.100 tying with Tristan van Natta of the U.S. However Giesbrecht was awarded the bronze because she had a higher score in the final (the final result combined the preliminary and final scores).
"I'm so happy, I never expected the medal at all," said Giesbrecht, 13, who started the sport three years ago. "I just went in to do my best. I stayed in the landing zone and nailed my second pass. I was really happy with that."
Other Canadian medallists this week were Curtis Gerein of Kamloops, B.C., with silver in the 15-16 double mini trampoline on Wednesday and Madigan with silver in the 15-16 individual trampoline on Friday.
