SAINT JOHN, N.B. - Some residents of southern New Brunswick were shaken by an earthquake Sunday evening.

Police and emergency officials received many calls about a loud bang at 7 p.m. that shook homes and rattled windows.

The province's Natural Resources Department later said it detected an earthquake measuring 2.2 on the Richter scale.

The quake's epicentre was 13 kilometres north of Saint John in the Rothesay area.

The U.S. Geological Survey also confirms there was a quake.

However, the American agency says it registered only 1.9 on the Richter scale.
