Most actively traded companies on the TSX, TSX Venture Exchange markets

TORONTO - Some of the most active companies traded Wednesday on the Toronto Stock Exchange and the TSX Venture Exchange:

Toronto Stock Exchange (11,636.90 up 97.27 points):

Coalcorp Mining Inc. (TSX:CCJ). Miner. Up 14 cents, or 68.29 per cent, to 34.5 cents on 12,073,714 shares. The Toronto mine developer's stock soared after an announcement that it had settled arbitrations with Glencore International A.G and a contract dispute with Prodeco.

B2Gold Corp. (TSX:BTO). Miner. Up 19 cents, or 19.39 per cent, to $1.17 on 11,978,041 shares. The Vancouver-based company's stock soared to its highest level ever as the company touts projections that its gold production from mines in Nicaragua will triple to 120,000 to 130,000 ounces next year.

Air Canada (TSX:AC.B). Airline. Up four cents, or 3.15 per cent, to $1.31 on 10,240,039 shares. Its corporate parent, ACE Aviation Holdings Inc. (TSX:ACE.B), announced earlier in the week that it will buy back up to $20 million worth of its class A and class B shares in a modified Dutch auction. Shares of ACE were up a penny, or 0.17 per cent, to close at $5.89.

Yamana Gold Inc. (TSX:YRI). Miner. Up 24 cents, or 1.68 per cent, to $14.52 on 5,292,336 shares. The metals and mining subgroup led all the advancers on the TSX, rising 2.59 per cent.

Manulife Financial Corp. (TSX:MFC). Insurer. Up 10 cents, or 0.54 per cent, to $18.60 on 4,848,764 shares. Canada's largest insurer has been trading heavily after cutting a deal to buy an interest in China-based ABN AMRO TEDA Fund Management Co. Last week, the Toronto company said it was raising $2.5 billion in a major stock issue to shore up its balance sheet.

Suncor Energy Inc. (TSX:SU). Oil and gas. Up 24 cents, or 0.62 per cent, to $38.94 on 4,445,979 shares.

TSX Venture Exchange (1,435.15 up 22.74 points):

Gold Wheaton Gold Corp. (TSXV:GLW). Miner. Up 2.5 cents, or 7.04 per cent, to 38 cents on 17,623,460 shares.

Leisure Canada Inc. (TSX:LCN). Real estate investment and development. Up 1.5 cents, or 7.32 per cent, to 22 cents on 8,081,000 shares.

Companies reporting major news:

Alimentation Couche-Tard Inc. (TSX:ATD.B). Convenience store operator. Up eight cents, or 0.38 per cent, to $21.05 on 580,925 shares on news it has acquired fuel terminal depots in Phoenix, Ariz. for an undisclosed price.

QLT Inc. (TSX:QLT). Drug developer. Up 74 cents, or 18.59 per cent, to $4.72 on 303,769 shares after it settled a suit with Massachusetts General Hospital. The Vancouver company paid US$20 million to settle a dispute over past and future royalties involving its Visudyne treatment for a common form of age-related blindness.
