ST. JOHN'S, N.L. - Newfoundland and Labrador's minister of environment and conservation has announced steps to help protect two species listed as endangered by the province.

Charlene Johnson says its important to assess risks in order to preserve a migratory bird called the Red Knot and a flowering plant known as the Crowded Wormseed Mustard.

The Red Knot stops in the province during the fall on its way from the Canadian Arctic to South America.

Under a recovery plan the province plans to identify threats in order to determine the appropriate levels of protection for the birds.

The Crowded Wormseed Mustard is a biennial or short-lived perennial herb that exists in only one location on Newfoundland's west coast.

Officials estimate there are only about 100 mature plants and they plan actions such as seed banking and the housing of live specimens in order to help with the recovery of the species.
