P.E.I. government to purchase 33 school buses in light of rusting problems

CHARLOTTETOWN - The P.E.I. government is adopting a new strategy to guide school bus safety, including purchasing 33 new vehicles.

Education Minister Gerard Greenan says the new buses will be delivered by September. Under the new regulations, no bus in the active fleet can be more than 12 years old. The 33 new buses will cost $2.6 million.

They are in addition to the 24 new buses that arrived in the province last week.

The province's entire fleet of school buses was pulled off the road for a few days this month after inspections found rust problems in many of them.
