Dredging company addresses environmental concerns in Sydney, N.S.

SYDNEY, N.S. - A spokesman for a company in the running for a proposed harbour dredging project in Cape Breton says there would be minimal impact on the fishery.

Alan Lievens and other representatives from Belgian contractor Jan De Nul are meeting with local businesses in Sydney, N.S., to discuss environmental concerns surrounding the project.

Dredging the city's harbour would make way for larger ships.

It's part of the province's $300-million wish list aimed at transforming Nova Scotia into the so-called Atlantic gateway to North America.

The project is undergoing an environmental impact study that's expected to be submitted to the federal government by the end of the year.

Lievens says if the project is approved in the new year, dredging could be underway by the fall of 2009.
