DUBLIN, N.H. - Yankee magazine's fall foliage website http://www.yankeefoliage.com is featuring six scenic drives, one for each of the New England states, perfect for an early autumn drive.
For Vermont, the magazine recommends the 29-kilometre stretch of Route 108 connecting Stowe and Jeffersonville via Smugglers' Notch. You'll find steep slopes and Mount Mansfield State Forest, and you can ride up the Stowe Gondola to the top of Mount Mansfield to check out the view.
For New Hampshire, enter the White Mountains from I-93 and Route 3 north through Franconia Notch, then head east along Route 302 to Route 16. The 120-kilometre winding drive offers panoramic views, hiking trails, brooks, waterfalls and covered bridges.
In Maine, take Route 201, a scenic byway, on the 125-kilometre stretch between Solon and Sandy Bay Township along the Canadian border. Look out for moose, especially in the early morning.
In Massachusetts, Route 6A in Cape Cod offers 65 kilometres of white clapboard homes, steepled churches, and the beach, quiet in the fall. Places of interest along the way include the Heritage Museums & Gardens in Sandwich and in Yarmouth Port, the Edward Gorey House.
Connecticut's Route 169 in the eastern part of the state off I-395 offers 50 kilometres of small towns, stone walls, big trees, red barns, and apple orchards.
In Rhode Island, a 13-kilometre loop in Newport County runs past classic New England architecture, stone walls, rolling farmland, vineyards and views of the ocean.
