Enrolment down at University of Regina; lots of jobs one reason

Published Saturday October 11th, 2008

REGINA - Enrolment at the University of Regina has dropped from last year.

There are 300 fewer students attending the post-secondary institution, a drop of three per cent.

University officials say they aren't surprised by the numbers and enrolment has been declining for a few years.

University spokeswoman Barb Pollock says there are plans to market the university differently and take steps internally that will make it more attractive to students to come and stay at the school.

She says declining enrolment at Regina city schools usually translates to a drop at the university level.

As well, Saskatchewan's economy is strong and there is a demand for workers.

Pollock says university officials are optimistic enrolment will start rising in the next few years.
