SYDNEY, N.S. - Nova Scotia has a new training centre that is expected to help meet the need for more pilots in China.

The Cape Breton Flight Institute in Sydney will operate from the Sydney Airport, creating 70 new jobs over the next five years.

The professional training centre is in negotiations with major Chinese airlines and the flight school expects to begin training its first class of cadets in September.

Over the next five years, the provincial government will invest $750,000 through payroll rebates from Nova Scotia Business Inc., the province's commercial lending agency.

The rebate is earned as the employer reaches yearly performance targets.

The company will also receive a $710,000 NSBI loan for startup costs, and Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation is also providing a $750,000 loan.

"The demand for pilots in China and other emerging markets has never been stronger," said Bill Gardiner, the institute's president and CEO.

Pilot cadets from China will live on campus at Cape Breton University, where they will also receive their ground school instruction.
