MAPLE RIDGE, B.C. - An RCMP spokesman says two women who were killed when a pickup truck plowed into a B.C. restaurant didn't know each other.

Cpl. Dale Carr of the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said Friday the 19-year-old woman was eating but he doesn't know if the 46-year-old female was working at the restaurant, eating or picking up some food.

Police have not yet released the women's names.

Six other people were hurt when the truck smashed into the restaurant in Maple Ridge, B.C., on Thursday night, three of them suffering serious but non life-threatening.

The pickup truck roared through a parking lot about 6 p.m. and slammed through the front window of the Halu Sushi restaurant, leaving the truck fully embedded in the building.

Witness Candice Denoni said it didn't look like an accident because the driver didn't slow down beforehand.

"It looked like it was purposeful," she said. "It was going very fast. I don't know if (the driver) fell asleep but there were no brakes."

Carr said the 51-year-old driver is in custody and homicide officers are investigating, but no charges have been laid.

"We are interviewing him and attempting to learn what was going through his mind as well as gathering additional evidence to support any sort of culpability and what that culpability is," he said.

"Is it in relation to a criminal charge or is in relation to a Motor Vehicle Act charge or no charge, or is it mechanical failure? We just don't know yet."
