TORONTO - Jockey Chad Beckon remains in hospital recovering from a fractured vertebrae, broken nose and cheek sustained during a spill at Woodbine Racetrack.
Beckon and fellow jockey Simon Husbands were thrown from their mounts Wednesday night after Oliver's Strike fell during the third race at the track.
Beckon, who was aboard Oliver's Strike, and Husbands were both taken to hospital.
Oliver's Strike was pronounced dead at the scene by the track's veterinarian.
"Simon went home from the hospital (Wednesday night) and is a little banged up," Robert King, the secretary-manager of the Jockeys' Benefit Association of Canada, said in a statement Thursday. "All of our thoughts are with Chad and Simon and their families."
Tony Esposito, Beckon's agent, said his client has movement in his hands and legs.
"He woke up on his own and he knows Cory (Beckon's wife) is with him," Esposito said. "He has full mobility of his arms and legs.
"He's holding her hand and squeezing it. We're optimistic. Every bit of good news is great to hear."
