Nationals earn playoff spot with close 18-17 victory over Cannons

TORONTO - Merrick Thomson scored five goals as the Toronto Nationals clinched a playoff spot with an 18-17 overtime win over the Boston Cannons in Major League Lacrosse play Thursday.

Heading into the fourth quarter down 15-9, Toronto rallied with eight goals but Boston's Kyle Sweeney scored with less than two minutes left to send it to overtime.

Joe Walters scored the OT winner on the powerplay at 2:57 to send Toronto (6-5) to their first post-season.

Thomson, the game's most valuable player, added three assists to lead all scorers.

Jeff Zywicki and Walters had three goals for Toronto, while Brad Ross, Shawn Williams and Delby Powless added two and Corey Small scored one.

Paul Rabil led the Cannons (6-5) with five goals and two assists.

Nationals goaltender Doc Schneider made 24 saves for the win while at the other end Kip Turner stopped 22 shots.
