Dawson's five points lead Excelsiors to Mann Cup sweep of Salmonbellies

BRAMPTON, Ont. - The Brampton Excelsiors swept aside the New Westminster Salmonbellies and captured their ninth Mann Cup lacrosse championship.

Dan Dawson of the National Lacrosse League's Boston Blazers had two goals and three assists Tuesday as the Excelsiors beat the Salmonbellies 9-6, completing a four-game sweep and giving Brampton its first title since 2002.

Blaine Manning of the Toronto Rock added two goals and two assists for Brampton, while Aaron Wilson, Dan Teat, Jeff Shattler and Brodie Merrill also scored. Josh Sanderson of the Calgary Roughnecks chipped in with four assists.

Anthony Cosmo, who plays NLL lacrosse with the Chicago Shamrox, made 41 saves for Brampton and was named player of the tournament.

Pete Morgan of the Portland Lumberjax led the Salmonbellies with a goal and three assists. Curtis Manning, Jamie Floris, Cliff Smith, Chris Gill, and Nenad Gajic also scored.

The Salmonbellies could not put an end to their Mann Cup title drought. They have won a record 24 Mann Cup championships but none since 1991.
