VICTORIA - The Bounty, the tall ship built in 1960 for MGM's film "Mutiny on the Bounty" starring Marlon Brando, will take centre stage at the Victoria Tall Ships Festival set for June 26-29.

The 54-metre square-rigged three-master was constructed in Lunenburg, N.S., based on the original 18th-century ship's drawings in British admiralty archives.

"The ship is steeped in history," said Bob Cross, president of the Victoria Tall Ships Society. "It'll be a real thrill for people to walk her decks and think of Captain Bligh and his mutinous crew, one of the greatest sea stories of all times."

The festival, with more than a dozen tall ships, is billed as a marquee maritime event among this year's celebrations marking British Columbia's 150th anniversary as a Crown colony.

Festival exhibits organized by the Maritime Museum of B.C. will celebrate contributions made by more than 20 ethnic groups to the development of the province.

As well, kiosks will offer historically inspired foods dating back to the 1830s, including early Jewish and Chinese food eaten in Victoria, gold-rush fare and afternoon tea.

There will also be a "pirate school" for children, live music and mock cannon battles off the Victoria waterfront.
